At DSI Samson Group, we take our social responsibilities very seriously. Our commitment to the betterment of our society goes way beyond business. With this in mind, in 1992, we launched an impressive programme named “Sithuvili” Sri Lanka (“thoughts”), an all island art competition now rated as the most prestigious art competition in Sri Lanka.

This competition provides an opportunity to children from all parts of Sri Lanka – from privileged backgrounds to the under-privileged to express their thoughts, impressions, views and concepts through drawing and painting. To encourage wider participation, entries are accepted in any medium (pencil, colour pencil, crayon, water colours, charcoal etc.).

The winners are recognised at a grand awards ceremony and cultural pageant attended by eminent businessmen, intellectuals as well as prominent local artists. The best part of the awards presentation is the fact that it’s not only the winners that get rewarded, the schools of the winners are also rewarded with a cash prize to be utilised for school development projects.

Being a responsible corporate citizen in Sri Lanka, DSI Samson Group is quite keen in supporting local sports such as volleyball and basketball.

The DSI Supersport Volleyball Tournament is the only volleyball tournament in Sri Lanka for school children to participate at national level. This prestigious tournament sees more than 100 schools battle it out in the different age categories.

In addition to volleyball, the subsidiary companies have sponsored individuals and teams in Athletics, Badminton and Basketball.

The DSI Samson Group and its subsidiary companies have always come forward to help those affected from natural disasters such as floods, droughts as well as in the aftermath of the deadly Tsunami.

During the rainy season when floods are quite common and when droughts hit the dry zones in some parts of the country, the Company and the welfare societies of individual subsidiaries come forward to assist the families that have been affected.

With the help of local and international partners along with company allocated funds, many rebuilding projects were undertaken in the badly affected Galle Town after the Tsunami in 2004. Within a few days the fruits and fish markets were restored. Many individual business owners were given assistance to restart their operations.

Being a corporate citizen for more than 40 years, community programmes at DSI Samson Group is certainly not a new topic. DSI Samson Group and its subsidiaries have always endorsed events that highlight the Sri Lankan culture and heritage.

One of the most popular events that DSI Samson Group had sponsored is an exhibition that highlights the ancient temples of Sri Lanka called “Raja Maha Weheraka Asiriya”. Under the first stage, one hundred ancient temples (Raja Maha Viharas) were photographed and each temple was highlighted in the newspaper on Poya Days. A description about the temple, pictures and directions are published on these advertisements. After the 100th temple was highlighted in this manner, an exhibition was held for 3 days in major cities and the public response we received for this project was outstanding.

The annual Vesak competition held in the Colombo Town Hall area is also jointly sponsored by DSI Samson Group.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration (Sooriya Mangallaya) along with the Independent Television Network is another community project that is held annually.
